Tach, Post!

Sind die nicht knuddelig und herzallerliebst? Die Post ist doch nicht so schlecht! Nachdem sich ein schwesterlicher Ostergruß anscheinend hierzulande abgesetzt hat (vermutlicher Hauptdrahtzieher: der Österhase!), ist heute eine süße Überraschung hereingeflattert. Vielen Dank an die Geroschn Fettguschen! ;-)
Leider muss ich berichten, dass es um die Überlebensaussichten der kleinen Gugls schlecht stand - ich habe sie umgehend und äußerst effizient vor den lebensfeindlichen Umgebungstemperaturen gerettet! Fui guad, die Kucherl!
Und nun geht's wieder frisch gestärkt an die Arbeit! Auffi! :-)

Ski heil! - un i a!

Sagenhaft - ich bin schon seit mehr als einem Monat hier! Kann mich mal bitte jemand kneifen, nur damit ich ganz sicher gehen kann? Es ist wirklich unglaublich, wie schnell die letzten Wochen vorbei gerast sind. Verständlicherweise ist in dieser Zeit schon ziemlich viel passiert und ich saß nicht einfach untätig herum, während die Welt sich weiter drehte.
Sodenn, hier mal eine kurze Rückschau auf das, was ich in den 4 Wochen zustande gebracht habe - in den wenigen Fällen, in denen ich NOCH (!) nicht erfolgreich war, bin ich weiterhin zuversichtlich, dass ich das in nullkommanix auch geregelt kriege. ;-)

Is it a month already? I might need someone to please pinch me, just to be on the safe side, since it's quite amazing how fast these last weeks went by. Understandably, a lot of things have happened and it's not that I had been sitting idly watching time crawl by, but still... I'm very amazed.

… erschließt sich einem erst gänzlich die fantastische Lage meiner neuen Heimat. Und mannomann, ich war ja von Jena schon ziemlich verwöhnt, was eine malerische Lage und schöne Umgebung angeht. Aber das hier? Da muss ich zugeben, dass es doch einiges gibt, was für eine Lage am Rande der Alpen spricht.
Oder würdet ihr bei diesem Anblick widersprechen?

In SUMma, it's a magna

I'm through with it! Today I defended my thesis and despite worries on my side of stress-induced forgetting of each and everything, I managed to present my thesis quite well and was even able to answer (most) of the questions by the examiners.
So apart from maybe sobering up a bit for this evening's swimming practice (hell yeah, "practice"), I'll just go off now and enjoy the rest of this beautiful sunny day. :-)

Ich hab's geschafft! Trotz gegenteiliger Befürchtungen von stress-bedingtem Gedächtnisverlust und generalisierter Aphasie habe ich heute anscheinend eine sehr gute Figur bei der Verteidigung meiner Dissertation abgegeben und darf mich hoffentlich in einigen Wochen auch "Doktor" schimpfen. Vorher dürft ihr das alle natürlich auch schon, nur ich halt noch nicht. ;-) Sodenn, ich genieße mal den Sonnenschein und die frische Luft (was ist das eigentlich?). Bis die Tage denne! :-)

Off to see places... China, take 2

Well then, I'm off now to see another part of this beautiful planet! This time, it's China. Yeah, I know - I've been there before but this year I'm bound to see yet another region of that fascinating country, before heading on to the symposium of the Melton Foundation. So the next two weeks will see me crawling around Southwest China - just dropping some names and places here so you can google them if you like. ;-) I hope to see some parts of Yunnan and Guangxi provinces, e.g. Kunming, Dali, Guilin, Yangshuo (for the latter two, use Google picture search!), and - time and train ticket availability permitting - on to HongKong and Macao. Not too much in my imaginery travel plan is fixed yet apart from my flight dates, so I'll just go when and where I like. Let's see how I'll fare with that. ;-)
Since I'll be leaving home this evening to go to Berlin and spend the night at my bro's place there before taking off in the early morning, I've finished 95% of my packing by now. Experience from past travels has made me weary of taking too much load with me, but I am of course far away from traveling light. However, the 23k-limit for checked baggage should not pose too much of a problem for the current state of my backpack. Heck, all that experience and list-writing (yessss! Guilty of that...) must be good for something, right? So you might wonder, how to tell the experienced (neurotic?) traveler apart from a greenhorn? The answer is this:

Why that? Quite easily - my new Lonely Planet for Southwest China simply doesn't cover Guangzhou (first destination and departure city after my travels), Hongkong and Macao. So here's the Hanna, chopping away at her old LonelyPlanet China (2004 edition, which is mostly outdated anyways in terms of accomodations), because she just doesn't want to lug this almost 2-pounder around for the info of just half a chapter. So I happily took the respective half chapter instead. ;-) Oh well, I think that might be it for now. Hopefully, my trip will involve a lot of great experiences, awesome places to see and fantastic people to get to know and see again (in the case of the symp, that is - don't think that I'll meet another non-MF person again in China, of all places!). And maybe I'll get to take my mind off from the other things going on in my life right now. Would be a welcome change...

So, liebe Leute - ICH BIN DANN MAL WECH!!! Die Hanna streicht nun erstmal für 3,5 Wochen die Segel an der heimischen Front und verzieht sich in den Osten, genauer gesagt in's Land der aufgehenden Sonne. Ja, da habe ich zwar schonmal die Sonne beim Aufgehen beobachten wollen, aber als erfahrene Reisende muss ich diese Erfahrung natürlcih nochmal überprüfen. Wer weiß, ob das auch auf andere als die schon bereisten Ecken des Landes zutrifft? Demnächst werde ich mich also in den Provinzen Yunnan und Guangxi (sprich: Jü-nann und Gu-ang-chi oder so ähnlich) herumtreiben und dabei hoffentlich Kunming, Dali, Guilin und Yangshuo anschauen (googelt ruhig mal, die letzten Orte am besten mit Google Bildersuche!). Danach geht's, wenn noch Zeit ist und ich Zugtickets ergattern kann, nach Hongkong und Macao. Und dann - nach ca. 2,5 Wochen - fliege ich weiter nach Shanghai und Hangzhou, wo dann (wieder mal) das Symposium der Melton Foundation steigt.Freu mich schon, dort die ganzen Quatschköpfe ;-) aus der Stiftung wiederzusehen, aber vorher erforsche ich erst einmal Südwestchina! Und damit dabei das Gepäck auch relativ gut zu schultern bleibt und weil selbst ich irgendwann aus den schweren (!) Erfahrungen vorangegangener Reisen lerne, habe ich sogar bei Buchmaterialien gespart. Zugegeben, ich habe nur ein halbes Kapitel aus der 2004er Ausgabe meines Lonely Planet China herausgetrennt - mein neuer (kleinerer) Reiseführer deckt eben Hongkong, Macao und Guangzhou nicht ab, ich wollte aber doch wenigstens einige wenige Infos auch für diese Orte haben (im Gegenzug aber nicht ein weiteres Kilo Papier mitschleppen). Sodenn, auf geht's also!

A wedding worth remembering, pt. 2

Before I drag it out too long, I'll just present the main cornerstones of the day.
8:00 a.m. - everyone is hurly-burly and busy, busy, busy - especially in the main Steel mansion, since the master bathroom (spell: only one for everyone on the middle floor) was to be blocked for ongoing traffic starting at 8 a.m. due to hair dressing appointments

10:15 a.m. - the bride is almost ready for presentation. Almost.

A wedding worth remembering, pt. 1

THE festivity of the year in my family was history 13 days ago, but only now do I find the time to aptly cover it. While I did not anticipate my brother's wedding to be a traditional one beforehand (because we were all looking forward to a joyful celebration with the greater family and circle of friends), in retrospect, it was a fantastic festivity, filled with just the right mixture of emotions as well as both more traditional rituals and modern customs.
DAS Fest des Jahres in der stählernen und kochenden Sippschaft ist seit nunmehr 13 Tagen vorbei, und doch finde ich erst heute (nacht) die Ruhe und Zeit, es angemessen zu würdigen. Obwohl ich ursprünglich kein traditionelles Fest mit allem Brimbamborium erwartete (dem Brautpaar war wichtig, dass es eine schöne Feier wird im Kreise der Familie und Freunde), war diese Hochzeit im Rückblick eine fantastische Feier, mit genau der richtigen Mischung aus Emotionen und sowohl alter Bräuche als auch neuerer Rituale.

YAY! It's here - my new camera bag! That was a nice event in yesterday's succession of library, library, library (throw in an occasional break for lunch, coffee or even ice-cream). So here it is:

Blown away

So after all the ruckus with traveling to Montreal and what not, there's silver lining on the horizon! I will most likely attend a conference in Portland,OR this fall. Actually, the only hurdle between me and the conference is the (unlikely) rejection of my submission. And an ocean. And a volcano. Darn it.

Tschackaaaaa!

Mein zweites kritisches Paper ist durch! Das heißt, dass mein Artikel nach mehreren Revisionen endlich angenommen wurde und ich jetzt mit voller Kraft am Rahmentext für meine publikationsbasierte Promotion und (parallel) an der Fertigstellung meines dritten Manuskripts arbeiten kann. Jippiee! Damit steht einem guten Abschluss dieser Arbeit "nur" noch Faulheit oder schlimmste Geschehnisse (hoffentlich nicht!) im Wege... *freu*

Ach ja, und die Sonne scheint heute. Wer hätte das gedacht... ;-)

Finally, finally, finally....
Waiting is worth it, that's for sure. Once more I was assured of that notion last saturday, when I came home and found a letter from Berlin - and enclosed was an awesome, funny and unique invitation to a greeeaaaat event!!! Happy... for them. And can't wait to get the parties (yes, plural!) started... the two of them know better (about their relatives) than to do their nuptials without having a proper "Polterabend" (go to Leo.org to find out more about this custom). Oh, the fun we'll have... ;-)

Endlich hat die Warterei ein Ende... der Postbote hatte ein Einsehen und brachte mir am Wochenende eine wunderschöne, lustige und originelle Einladung zur anstehenden Hochzeit zweier Neu-Hauptstädter. ;-) Da zeigt sich wieder mal - was lange währt, wird endlich gut (ob das nun die Einladung oder Hochzeit meint, bleibt eurer Interpretation überlassen). Wie auch immer, ich freue mich schon auf die Feiereien (jaja, wir reden hier im Plural!), denn bevor gehochzeitet wird, wird auch ordentlich gepoltert. Da kennen die beiden ihre Verwandschaft wohl besser und haben es vorgezogen, Überraschungen polternder Art von der Hochzeit fernzuhalten. Das wird ein Spaß... ;-)

So there, another week, another photography experiment. This time involving:

- and the "wrong" processing solution.
And, tadaaaa, we have cross-processed slide pictures. Some of which turned out strikingly intense... ;-)

Ok, off now to some watersplashing and gulping... some might call that swimming, too. ;-)
